A Vision in Wood
By
Architect John Lautner’s (1911-94) architecture stems from it’s context.
Revered as one of the pioneers of the Modernist movement in America, Lautner apprenticed
with Frank Lloyd Wright and went on to design many remarkable, inspiring structures.
The ‘Walstrom House’,
built into a hillside in 1969, in the Santa Monica Mountains, Los Angeles is
one of my favourites. Designed for an employee’s mother, the residence is a wooded
vision bathed in natural light, surrounded with greenery.
Lautner’s architecture
doesn’t prescribe to a particular style. Each of his projects has a unique
identity. ‘Organic’ is the word I would use to describe the feel in his
designs : springing out of the site, celebrating and embracing the setting’s
features is the unique thread running through all of Lautner’s work.
